Arm Candy: Boyy Bag
By Arushi Khosla June 30, 2010
Meet Jesse Dorsey and Wannasiri Kongman, the brains behind Boyy, a line of uber luxe handbags and accessories. A former musician and scenester from Canada and a former FIT grad from Thailand get together to create one line of effortlessly fabulous bags. 9 seasons of partnership past, the globe trotting twosome, who spend their time between 3 cities continue their accessory takeover.
The focal point and main concentration of the entire SS10 line is custom hardware. The line’s signature embellishment this season is, without a doubt, the custom metal bands that adorn a ton of the pieces. From pink suede to lizard skin, they’ve got all your style needs covered. The designers call this season “Gypsy Lux” and we couldn’t agree more. What’s amazing is that the bags are extremely utilitarian chic but also undeniably decadent. So while you won’t be stuffing all your things in your pocket to look stylish with these bags in the day, they don’t look clunky and depressingly tawdry either. Another thing noticeable feature is that while their bags are big on the hardware and androgyny, they are reeking of a feminine allure.
I have only managed to snag about 3 of the collection of 11 but needless to say, they’re absolutely gush worthy. Here’s the lowdown:
Slash STUD: The Slash series features the basic Slash, the Lizard and finally, my favorite, the Stud. If you’ve been reading my posts, it’s not indecipherable to see that I have a massive crush on anything studded. Which is why this bag was perfection in my eyes. The double sided flap and detachable chain holder snap make for quick accessibility and comfort and the flap and nappa leather flap with lots of zips and compartments, all fit into the compact space of this relatively small bag is admirable and makes it very wearable when on the go. I love to use it as an oversize clutch in the evening and pull out the strap for the day. This beauty comes in 3 sublime colors; the Simon le Blanc, black and sweatshirt, the black, not so surprisingly being my favorite. Throw it on with a casual hot pants+sheer white crop top+cool, tropical printed scarf and sky high wedges ensemble for the day and anything minimalistic for the night, to really WEAR the accessory.
The SYD: My favorite piece from the collection, it’s the kind of bag that, once you set your eyes upon it, it literally is the only thing clouding your dreams. I found myself practically talking to the bag saying “Hello Syd, come stay in my closet forever”, sounding like a lunatic. While Boyy is not what you call high street, it is definitely in some semblance, affordable luxury. High end pieces that don’t break the bank and reduce you to live off ramen for a month, stroking your purchase for solace. This piece is the perfect example of the custom metal bands mentioned above. The nappa leather body is just gorgeous, and the hardware makes it very rocker chic. This is that quintessential It Bag. The kind you’d see on…think Alice Dellal or Daisy Lowe. Pair with something that’s not too wildly printed so as to not take away from the bag and you’re all set! It’ll definitely catapult you to It Girl status.
The SYLVESTER: Probably the only piece from the line which veers more towards hippie chic than rocker chic. The fringed accents are the Anti Boyy and that’s pretty darn interesting. There’s also a wide array of jewel toned colors like black, Gibraltar, little bananas, cherry ice cream and, of course, sweatshirt. Layered napa leather, anyone? The gun metal chain and of course, the custom metal bands are omnipresent.
