Designer profile: Gurdeep Lall

By June 23, 2010

I’ve always been a fervent researcher of hip new Indian originated labels doing well internationally. My obsession started with Ashish and Manish Arora and has transcended to the likes of Bibhu M, Prabal Gurung and most recently, Gurdeep Lall and his label “Lall London”.

Newly launched with the collection “ARCANA” comprising of high end pieces with scores of decadent fabrics and heavy embellishments.  Think casual luxe  a la uber chic shirts, vests, leather leggings and slightly more formal pieces for the evening.  Hand sequined shirts plus graphics were in abundance. There were some slouchy pants, an homage to the current super trend and on the whole, relaxed silhouettes with more jeweled undertones ruled supreme.

Inspiration? Le Corbusier, Mies van der Rohe and Chris Bangle. Clean lines were also on the agenda and the man’s personal triumphs clearly show in his creative work on fabric.

I happened to snag two great pieces from the collection so here’s a short review!

The Warp vest

Warp vest: This gorgeous basic chiffon underlay vest with a melange of sequins, colorblocked in silver on tops and gold below.

The strong simplicity of the dress mingles with the heavy embellishments on top but they’re structured very neatly.  The sleeveless cut and the sublime creamy backdrop accompanied by the sequins in dull colors make it the perfect summer shirt for a night out with the girls.

I’d suggest, throw this on with black silk harems if you’re feeling more experimental or just trust your leather leggings. Stilettos are the rule. Sky high with huge platforms, please.

Lollymelt dress

Lollymelt dress:

This one is without a doubt my favorite from the collection. The decadent silk underlay, the sprinkling of sequins in jewel tones. Stunning. Lapis’, fuchsias, ebonies   and ceruleans effortlessly make this dress a cooler, more updated version of the traditional sequined mini.

This one is probably more date-appropriate. While I’d pair it with black YSL tribute sandals, someone with a more eclectic taste could definitely try brighter, hot pink shoes.  Keep the rest of the accessories more  toned down. Think black silk mini clutch.

Needless to say, I’m a fan. If you want to take a look at more of their pieces, head on over to http://www.lalllondon.com

Happy Shopping!
