Match Made In Heaven?

Topshop is one of the most popular go-to places for a fashionista’s fashion emergency. Kate Moss is not only one of the world’s most famous models, she is also one of the most scandalous, most talked about and highest paid. So is Kate Moss+Topshop a match made in fashion heaven or a disaster waiting to happen? We break it down for you.

Topshop and Kate M. first joined hands back in 07 when Topshop very generously offered Miss. Moss £3 million in return for which she choose designs, then modeled them gave the brand her most important asset – her name. The first collection, needless to say, a huge success – with us plebeians of course. Most tabloids and journalists brushed it away saying that it was just a refection of what Kate wore in her everyday life and it was not half as fabulous as people made it out to be. Fashion advisors Trinny Woodall and Susannah Constantine argued that these clothes were made for size zero women and weren’t the easiest thing for a “real” woman to pull off. Fair enough; but seeing as Kate herself is all waif, I wasn’t too surprised to see clothes made for that kind of body.  With fifty designs which included everything from clothes to bags to shoes to accessories, this collection marked the beginning of quite a journey.

Despite criticism from journalists and fashion experts, the Topshop/Kate Moss affair continuous. Why? Well, it is simple. She is Kate Moss. Being a regular on les tabloids, she is someone everyone is familiar with. So hate her or love her, everyone still wants a piece of her. And pieces of her was what they got through her collections pour Topshop.

The Latest Collection:

I could talk about the previous collection, how amazing they were, how they embodied grunge, embodied Kate Moss down to every last seam, but we all know about that don’t we?  The latest collection is the one that stood out for me. It was so pretty. Not the first thing that comes to mind when you think of Kate Moss, is it? Sexy? Maybe. Super freaking awesome? Sure. But pretty? Not so much. The other thing that comes to mind is preppy and we all know that to use the words “Kate Moss” and “preppy” in the same sentence is an anomaly. Not to say that I didn’t completely adore this collection. The designs were so lovely, the colors so dainty – it truly is a prep-princesses dream come true. Back to my main point though, it isn’t very Kate Moss. And that was what they signed her on for, right? To bring a little bit of Kate to the masses? So why this sudden change? Are they trying to reach out to a wider audience? Are they trying to be more commercial? I can’t pin-point exactly what this sudden change in direction is, but I can’t say I was not disappointed. Has it been a regular Topshop collection, I would have “ooh-ed” and “ah-ed” with the rest of the world, but seeing as it was a Kate Moss for Topshop collection, I was sorely disappointed. I loved that their collaboration gave birth to collections that were pretty, no doubt, but they were still slightly grungy and rocker-chic. This new Blair Waldorf avatar? Not digging it too much.

How about you? What is your take on the new Kate Moss for Topshop collection? We would love to hear your opinion!
