As a wise-beyond-her-years friend of mine once said, “The best thing about winter is a new wardrobe.” For most of us in Canada it certainly is worth investing in some new winter clothes since the season will stick around for at least eight months. Shoes are arguably the most important part of a woman’s wardrobe, which is why we’re going to take a look at the most popular shoe trends for Winter 2009/2010.

To The Knee And Beyond

A distinct trend spotted on Winter 2009/2010 runways was the extra high boot. Designers were taking boots up to the knee and some even higher. It was not uncommon to see a boot reaching up to a model’s mid-thigh. While thigh-high boots might not be the most practical choice for the average woman, knee-high is certainly doable. When worn with skirts or dresses, these extra long boots will offer more protection from the frigid temperatures. They also look great over skinny pants or tights.

Ankle Biters

It seems there is no middle ground when it comes to boot length this year. On the other end of the spectrum is the ankle boot. Also, called a shoe boot or bootie, this style is basically a regular high heel with higher sides that come up to cover the ankle. They are obviously not designed to tackle snow banks, but look great with a cocktail dress at a holiday party.

Tie Your Shoes

Another big trend for winter is the lace-up shoe or boot. Luckily, the look can be achieved without having to re-lace every time, saving you precious minutes on your way out. Many designers have opted to put a zipper along the inside of their lace-up boots so they can be easily removed and slipped on without all the fuss of lacing them up. So you get the look of a lace-up, with the convenience of a zipper. Look for them in brighter colours this year to contrast the usual drab neutrals that rule winter wardrobes.

Mistle-Toes

This winter, two different toe shapes for shoes have been introduced as the next big things. The squared off toe is a popular feature among designers, while the runways were pounded by plenty of super pointy toes too. Both trends hearken back to the 80s, but with an updated look.

Wild Thing

Animal print has been in for a little while now, but the craze is definitely infiltrating shoe designs this winter. You’re more likely to see snakeskin or crocodile designs than spots or stripes. Remember to keep your outfit neutral when going with a pair of dramatic animal print shoes so that they are your boldest accessory.

Reaching New Heights

The stiletto heel is here to stay and those brave enough to teeter on them will have plenty of options this winter. Wedge heels continue to be popular as well. The tapered heel is something new on the runway this year, starting thick at the top and tapering down to stiletto size when it hits the ground. Of course, ballet flats are still perfectly in style so you can grab a pair when you need a break from your heels. Flats are available in a multitude of colours and materials this year, as well as with a variety of embellishments and decorations.

Flat And UGG-like

Despite their severe unattractiveness, the popularity of the super comfortable UGG brand of boots seems to be growing all the time. Luckily for UGG enthusiasts, this year there are plenty of flat, warm winter boots on the shelves. Some of them mimic the UGG style, while others go their own way. Either way, these boots are rather practical for Canadian winters.

Winter Colours

Generally, it’s recommended that your winter boots stick to neutral colours like black, brown, tan or, if you’re brave and have lots of time to spend on clean-up, white. However, you shouldn’t discount colour entirely. While the purple fad may not last forever, for this winter at least, purple boots are perfectly on trend. A classic colour that should last through the seasons is a deep, wine red. No matter what you choose, just remember that your boots have to match with several different outfits, since winter doesn’t offer you the same amount of footwear options as summer does.

Shoe Shopping

Shopping for shoes is something most women enjoy, so hopefully this article on Winter 2009/2010 shoe trends has given you an excuse or two to head to the shoe store!
